New "Stop Now Orders"

Recent Product Safety Recalls

From 1 June 2001, Trading Standards Officers will have a new law with which to hit rogue traders. From that date, traders who flagrantly flout the law can be issued with one of the new orders telling them to stop their actions. Failure to comply with one of these orders will lead to the traders being in contempt of court and facing an unlimited fine or possibly imprisonment.

The kind of practices this new law might cover include cowboy builders and doorstep sellers who repeatedly refuse to tell consumers of their cancellation rights as required by law and holiday firms who misdescribe their holidays.

Anyone who has a complaint they think we should be aware of should contact Trading Standards on 793 2022.
